SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night looks at five decades of an American comedy institution.
The British relationship with Saturday Night Live has always been arm’s length. While SNL airs “Live from New York” on NBC, it hasn’t always been easy to locate in the UK schedules. These days, it’s on Sky Comedy, on Sunday evenings.
With its topical comedy skits, as well as plenty of political satire, we don’t always get the jokes either. However, with impressive guest stars and musical acts, as well as highlights propagating over the Atlantic via social media, the show’s impact is often felt.
Over its 50-year run, SNL has been a breeding ground for talent – plenty of whom have become internationally famous as they’ve graduated to front television shows and movies. From Chevy Chase, John Belushi and Bill Murray, though to the likes of Adam Sandler, Mike Myers, Tracy Morgan, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Andy Samberg and many, many more.
Some of its skits have also developed into movies too – you can thank SNL for The Blues Brothers, Wayne’s World and the sorely underrated Coneheads.
As part of celebrating the show’s anniversary, an origin story movie is in UK cinemas this month. Saturday Night dramatizes the chaotic 90-minute run up to the first ever show.

In addition, Peacock has a four-part documentary series looking at the show’s history to be broadcast this month.
SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night examines the show’s history, visits the famous writers’ room, looks at the iconic cowbell sketch and considers its make-or-break 11th season.
Saturday Night is on release from January 31st. SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night streams on Peacock from the 16th January, 2025.
SNL itself airs on Sky Comedy on Sunday evenings at 9 pm.
