Screw Series Two – Channel 4’s prison drama is back for another stretch

The doors of C Wing will open again for Screw Series Two.

Screw, the comedy drama about the prison officers and inmates at the fictional Long Marsh prison launched in January.

Starring Nina Sosanya as a workaholic senior officer, with Jamie-Lee O’Donnell (Derry Girls) as a compromised new recruit, Screw was inspired by writer Rob Williams’ (Killing Eve) real-life experiences of working and volunteering in prisons. The series posed plenty of thought-provoking questions about the nature of incarceration and the realities of prison life.

Screw: Nina Sosayna as Leigh Henry

With the darkly comic show a success for the broadcaster, Channel 4 have commissioned a second series. The new run promises to be “bigger, bolder, and more dangerous than ever.

Here’s the premise for Screw Series Two:

After the tragic events of the series one finale, our team of embattled prison officers, led by Leigh Henry (Nina Sosanya), are determined to make a fresh start.  But as those behind the cell doors of C Wing know only too well, moving on isn’t always simple.  With changes at the very top and fresh faces both on the wing and in the staff room, Leigh’s new bond with Rose (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell) – and the secrets they share – will be tested to the limit.

As the whole team struggles to make a difference to the complicated lives in their care, rumours of an undercover policeman on the wing not only threatens order at Long Marsh, but could blow open a criminal plot involving at least one of our officers. And one way or another, the truth will come out…

As the synopsis suggests, the show left a number of plot threats hanging so there’s plenty to pick up on.

As well as Nina Sosanya and Jamie-Lee O’Donnell, the other series regulars are returning too; Faraz Ayub, Stephen Wight, Ron Donachie and Laura Checkley will reprise their roles as C Wing’s prison officers.

Speaking of the recommission, Caroline Hollick, Head of Channel 4 Drama says:

“We’re thrilled to welcome back the staff and prisoners of C Wing. Rob (Williams) has created an iconic Channel 4 prison series with a fantastic cast and we can’t wait to jump back into the drama, humanity and humour of life behind bars in series two.”

Screw is an STV Studios production for Channel 4. Rob Williams is creator, lead writer and executive producer on the show, with Roanne Bardsley and Ciara Conway also writing. Sarah Brown is executive producer for STV Studios, with Nick Lambon producing.

With no timescale for the new series yet, our best guess is sometime in early 2023. In the meantime, the first series remains available to stream on All4.
