Shining Vale (billed as a horror comedy) has been picked up (from pilot) by Starz
Deadline has reported on the commissioning of Shining Vale. The series is the co-creation of Jeff Astrof (Trial & Error) and Sharon Horgan (Divorce). The series stars Courteney Cox (Friends), Greg Kinnear (The Stand) and Mira Sorvino (Glow & Darkness [due later this year]).
The short synopsis is: …dysfunctional family moves from the city to a cursed house in a small town. The Deadline piece has a lot more details (we condense it here):
Patricia “Pat” Phelps (Cox), is convinced she’s either depressed or possessed – the symptoms are identical. Pat rose to fame by writing a raunchy, drug-and-alcohol-soaked women’s empowerment novel. Fast forward 17 years, Pat is clean and sober but totally unfulfilled. She still hasn’t written her second novel, can’t remember the last time she had sex with her husband (Kinnear), and her teenage kids are at that stage where they want you dead. She was a faithful wife until her one slip-up: she had a torrid affair with the hot, young handyman who came over to fix the sink.
In a last-ditch effort to save their marriage, she and Terry cash in all their savings and move the family to a large, old house in the suburbs that has a storied past of its own. Everyone has their demons, but for Pat Phelps, they may be real.
Sorvino plays Rosemary, who is either Pat’s alter ego, a split personality, her id, her muse, or a demon trying to possess her. Merrin Dungey plays Kam, Pat’s oldest friend and book editor. Gus Birney and Dylan Gage also star as Pat and Terry’s teenage kids, Gaynor and Jake.
Our initial thoughts are this seems like a lot of ingredients and we don’t have any character notes apart from Cox’s character. We’ll keep our eyes out for more news and bring it too you when we get it.
