We get a first look as director James Gunn’s DC television series, which stars John Cena.

DC’s virtual FanDome event this weekend has granted us a further slice of hilarious James Gunn comic book action.

Peacemaker will tell the origin story of the character we met in The Suicide Squad. As Gunn described him in an interview with Empire magazine, “Peacemaker has a clear set of ideals that I find really interesting… You know: ‘I want peace no matter how many men, women and children I need to kill to get it.’”

In that same piece, John Cena is frank about his character: “This guy is a loud, obnoxious, bro-ey douchebag. That sucks. But why? At what point did he become such a douchebag and what does that mean? There’s a lot to dive into there.”

Peacemaker also stars Danielle Brooks as Adebayo, Freddie Stroma as Vigilante, Jennifer Holland as Harcourt, Steve Agee as Economos, Chukwudi Iwuji as Murn, and Robert Patrick (Terminator 2: Judgement Day) as Auggie Smith.

There’s also a NSFW clip of the show to watch too, which was released earlier in the month:

James Gunn has written all eight episodes of Peacemaker and directed five, including the first. Gunn, Peter Safran and Matt Miller serve as executive producers on the series, with John Cena also a co-executive producer.

The show is produced by James Gunn’s Troll Court Entertainment and The Safran Company in association with Warner Bros. Television.

It will debut on Thursday, January 13 on HBO Max in the US. There’s no news on a UK channel as yet, but we imagine Peacemaker might well find a home on Sky / Now TV with their other HBO content. We’ll keep you posted.
