Twisted Metal – Anthony Mackie to lead adaptation of a PlayStation classic

The new Captain America will play a motor-mouthed outsider on the small screen.

US streamer Peacock have given the go ahead to Twisted Metal, a 30-minute action-comedy series based on the classic PlayStation game of the same name. The show stars Anthony Mackie (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) and comes from Cobra Kai’s Michael Jonathan Smith, who writes and will be showrunner.

Here’s the premise for Twisted Metal:

Twisted Metal is a high-octane action comedy, based on an original take by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Deadpool) about a motor-mouthed outsider offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

With the help of a trigger-happy car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck.

Anthony Mackie will star as John Doe, a fast-talking, fast-talking milkman. Suffering from amnesia, he gets a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make his wish of finding community come true, but only if he can survive an onslaught of vehicular combat.

Sony Pictures TV, Playstation Productions and Universal Television are behind the project, with Mackie taking an executive producer role. So too will Michael Jonathan Smith, alongside Will Arnett and Marc Forman, via their Electric Avenue production company.

Captain America 4

Of course, Twisted Metal is not the only iron Anthony Mackie has in the fire. During the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, his character Sam Wilson assumed the mantle of Captain America. Now Marvel are cooking up a big screen outing for him; Malcolm Spellman, lead writer on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, is developing the project. It’s effectively Captain America 4, but we’re sure they’ll dream up a punchier title!

Spark

Away from winged superheroes and post-apocalyptic wastelands, Anthony Mackie is also preparing to step behind the camera.

He’s going to direct Spark, the story of the unsung civil rights pioneer Claudette Colvin. She’s the teenager who bravely refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama before Rosa Parks. However, civil rights leaders decided, as a dark-skinned young woman, she was not the right face to front their public campaign.

The film will star Saniyya Sidney (King Richard) as Colvin, with a script by Niceole R. Levy (Cloak & Dagger). Speaking of the story to Deadline, Mackie said:

“Not only was I moved, I was inspired. It’s great to be a superhero in movies but she’s a real live one living amongst us and I’m honored to tell her story.”

We’ll keep you posted.
