FX renews Welcome to Wrexham for a further three seasons
This will take the show to eight seasons, with the eight showing in 2029.
The news comes as the series prepares to premiere its fifth season on Friday, May 15, with the first two episodes available exclusively on Disney+. One new episode of the eight-episode fifth season will stream weekly. All previous seasons are now streaming on Disney+.
What is Welcome to Wrexham
From the press release:
Rob Mac (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) navigate running the 3rd oldest professional football club in the world. Welcome to Wrexham is a docuseries tracking the dreams and worries of Wrexham, a working-class city in North Wales, UK, as two Hollywood stars guide the future of their historic club.
In 2020, Rob and Ryan teamed up to purchase the 5th tier Red Dragons in the hopes of turning the Club into an underdog story the whole world could root for. The world took notice and the club made history, achieving back-to-back-to-back promotions, catapulting the Reds into the English Football League’s Championship for the first time in over four decades.
There’s a lot more in the press release linked above. It covers the current season of the show as the team is four points short of the play-off places with only four more games to go. It also mentions the shows audience, ratings and the performance of Wrexham AFC Women’s team.
Clearly the team and football has a lot of momentum at present — we note also Apple TV’s renewal of Ted Lasso for (reportedly) three more seasons. We can thank the upcoming World Cup in the US, Canada and Mexico.
