Warner Bros has finally firmed up plans to release Wonder Woman 1984 and here in the UK we get to see it in cinemas, lockdown depending.
Although it was ready for a late November 2019 release, Wonder Woman 1984 was delayed to hit the summer 2020 blockbuster season, a decision causing winces with the benefit of hindsight. Estimated to have cost $200m, the film will now be simultaneously released (in the US) on Christmas Day both in cinema and on HBO Max. The worldwide cinema release is on the early date of December 16, subject to national / local lockdowns. There’s no indication as to when, or if, Wonder Woman 1984 will stream in the UK as HBO Max is not available.
As to the film itself, Gal Gadot is back in the title role (and alter ego Diana Prince), and Chris Pine is back as Steve Trevor (presumably in flashbacks given the decades between the World War Two setting of Wonder Woman. There’s a new super-villain for this film, with Kriten Wiig (Bridesmaids, Ghostbusters) playing the part of Cheetah. Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones, Narcos, Mandalorian) plays Max Lord, who is originally from the comics. Will his mind control powers prove to be Wonder Woman’s undoing? We suspect not!
The trailer is available here if you need something to tide y0u over the final few weeks wait until release, or watch the first film on Netflix.
