‘Yonderland’ review: Season 3 Episode 3 is as visually brilliant as it is hilarious

Posted Filed under

While Debbie attempts to convince her husband that Scotland’s not actually that great a place to move to, a new hero emerges in Yonderland to do… heroisms.

Let’s be real, guys: this can only end badly, can’t it?

But things are going from bad to worse anyway!  Cue me pantomime shouting BUT HE’S A VERY NAUGHTY MAN! at the television as Cuddly Dick continues his crusade against the elders and Debbie.  (And Elf’s book sales no doubt tank spectacularly.  Tough break, pal.)

Turns out the Bird is a well-intentioned rich kid with daddy issues, whose well-intentioned if wholly unrealistic goal is to eradicate all crime.  Debbie’s attempt to thwart this backfires spectacularly, but then the backfire backfires too.  The elder sleepover in Debbie’s attic continues (with nearly disastrous results both for Debbie maintaining her secret identity and her plumbing) but one hopes that they’ll figure out a way to reverse Dick’s influence on the land before the series is through.  Tension!

Meanwhile, Negatus and his apparent festival of personal issues have finally become fed up with Cuddly Dick and his gaggle of evil-doers, and with some minor convincing, he gets the band back together to exact their revenge.  Hooray, kind of, apart from the whole jail thing.  That’s a shame, except it isn’t, because he’s still evil, but arguably less so because he’s significantly less good at it.  I feel so conflicted.  Curse you, grey morality.

But can I just take a moment to give massive high fives and love to the props and costumes teams?  The amount of design that must have gone into something like Sleepy Puppy Dad’s adorable costume or the pup robbers or the titular Bird and Bee – and Debbie’s adorable cat costume – is one of the things that makes this show so very lovable.  It’s as visually brilliant as it is hilarious.

(Even if a certain elder does spend a lot of his time giving the costume department a reprieve from having to design almost anything at all…)
