We first meet Archer in 1941, with the vast majority of England and Wales are under Nazi occupation after losing the Battle of Britain. Pockets of resistance continue to show their defiance against the occupying German forces, but after a German pilot is murdered by a British Resistance fighter, tensions in London could not be higher.
When investigating what appears to be a simple black market murder, Archer is dragged into a much darker and more treacherous world where the stakes are as high as the ultimate outcome of the war. The elusive American journalist Barbara Barga may hold the key – but can he trust her? And when his lover Sylvia endangers her life by bravely making a stand against the oppressive regime, Archer is forced to confront a deeper dilemma.
Can he carry out his duty to defend law and order when he is working for the wrong side? What is he willing to risk in the fight against fascism?

Harry feels betrayed that Archer didn’t trust him with the tip-off from Sylvia, and warns Archer that Jimmy is too inexperienced to handle such an important case – but will Archer take his advice?
Meanwhile Huth tries to piece together the charred remains of the burned scientific formula found at crime scene, demanding that Archer assist him in hunting down the Resistance. Morally torn and in dangerous waters, Archer’s dilemma deepens further when he is introduced to Colonel George Mayhew. The Resistance is playing a long game which stands to rid the country of the Nazis once and for all – but at what cost?
And as he gets closer to Barbara Barga, Archer begins to suspect that her mysterious influence runs even deeper than he had thought.

Finding the missing atomic bomb documents becomes Archer’s main priority as he frantically tries to track down the elusive Dr John Spode.
Still a target for the Resistance, Archer faces a fatal tussle on the underground and a deadly explosion at Highgate Cemetery.

With the army imposing martial law and a rounding-up of Resistance members, Archer faces life-changing decisions.
Barbara’s surprise proposal could provide a safe haven for Archer and his son, but can he really trust her with the country’s most sought-after possession?
Despite being caught in the middle of a battle between Kellermann and Huth, will Archer finally agree to help free the King?

Archer and Harry attempt to drive the king out of London, but things do not go to plan and Sylvia becomes an unlikely ally.
Following a rough interrogation with a badly shaken Barbara Barga, Kellermann is hot on Archer’s heels.
With Huth desperate for the atomic secrets, will the showdown at Bringle Sands end in triumph for Archer and the Resistance or will Kellermann have the last laugh?
