Vicky McClure (Line of Duty) and Morven Christie (The A Word) lead the cast of BBC One’s new Glasgow-set psychological thriller The Replacement.
Written and directed by Joe Ahearne (The Secret of Crickley Hall, Doctor Who), the three-part series also stars Dougray Scott, Neve McIntosh, Richard Rankin, Navin Chowdhry and Siobhan Redmond.
The Replacement follows the paranoia of a woman who sees her identity being dismantled and can’t work out whether the cause is another woman or her own baby.
Episode 1
Tuesday 28 February 2017, 9pm
Ellen (Morven Christie) gets pregnant after landing a big contract for her firm of architects. She hires Paula (Vicky McClure) as cover – but soon fears that she’s made a terrible mistake.
Ellen wants to get back to work quickly, but Paula thinks Ellen should be putting her baby first. She wastes no time in moving in on Ellen’s bosses, clients and friends – and Ellen fears she’s being forced out.
Everyone thinks Paula is great and Ellen is being paranoid, until a site accident puts Ellen’s suspicions into overdrive.
Episode 2
Tuesday 7 March 2017, 9pm
Ellen tries to juggle her new baby with returning to work and investigating Paula. She finds evidence that her boss was having an affair, but her only lead is Paula’s 10 year-old daughter Caris, and Paula’s former colleague, the mysterious Georgia, neither of whom want to speak to her.
Ian asks her to stop pushing, as her fixation is taking priority over Lia, her newborn baby.
Paula discovers Ellen’s investigation and engineers a humiliating situation with a client and a warning visit from social services. Ellen eventually confronts Paula and forces her to confess what she’s been hiding.
Episode 3
Tuesday 14 March 2017, 9pm
After Paula confesses her secret, Ellen thinks she has proof that Paula is disturbed – but no one else sees it her way.
Ian thinks that Ellen is being insensitive and paranoid. The office turns against her and she is forced to leave for good, and when she tries to put Paula behind her Paula isn’t willing to let go.
When Ellen encounters Paula’s mysterious ex-colleague Georgia at an interview, Paula retaliates by driving a wedge between Ellen and her husband, questioning the paternity of their baby daughter.
After a catastrophic celebration at the new building, Ellen faces a fight not only for her career, but for her family as well.
