Connoisseurs of William Shatner’s musical career – or the sonically-challenged, as they’re technically known – may well argue over the respective merits of his emotive, spoken-word interpretations of ‘How to Handle a Woman’, ‘Rocket Man’ and ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’ without ever coming to any conclusions as to which is the best.

One fairly modern contender for the top slot is this barnstorming rendition of ‘Common People’ from 2004, in which – despite clearly not being entirely conversant with some of the British slang involved – he gives it the full Shat and emerges triumphant on the other side.

Bizarrely, the tune is accompanied here by a slightly disturbing cut-up of the Star Trek animated series which implies – as absolutely nobody ever has in the past, no sirree, Mr Shatner – that Captain Kirk and Mr Spock were at it…
