Whilst trying to ignore the directions from off-camera and the stilted embarrassment of trying to fill a few minutes before an episode of Doctor Who on the New Jersey Network in 1986, ex-Time Lord Patrick Troughton slags off Colin Baker – ‘He’s a bit overweight … he’s going on the non-fat milk’ – and explains his unusual facial foliage to the fawning, unwisely-moustachioed host.

‘I always grow a beard when I’m out of work,’ he says, ‘and you can tell how long I’ve been out of work by the length of my beard.’ Happily, even in such awkward surroundings, Pat remains resolutely unruffled.
