In an interview in the new issue of Doctor Who Magazine, Coleman reveals: “I know what my introduction is and I have a general idea of where we’re going to go.”
She adds: “There’s definitely a story arc. It sounds really interesting, really exciting. I don’t think anything’s been done like it before, but there are lots of secrets and intrigue, and I think it’s going to throw and confuse a lot of people, and surprise a lot of people…”
The former Emmerdale actress was officially announced as the new companion by showrunner Steven Moffat last month.
Moffat teased: “Who she’s playing, how the Doctor meets her, and even where he finds her, are all part of one of the biggest mysteries the Time Lord ever encounters. Even by the Doctor’s standards, this isn’t your usual boy meets girl.”

Coleman’s character will first be seen in this year’s Christmas special, following the departure of Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill as Amy and Rory.
