Hurt will guest star in the episode, alongside Gavin & Stacey‘s Joanna Page and returning cast members David Tennant and Billie Piper.

The Alien actor told Eastern Daily Press that he plays “part of the Doctor” in a “kind of trinity” which includes David Tennant.

The hints support rumours that Hurt will be playing a forgotten incarnation of the Doctor who fought in the Time War between Paul McGann and Christopher Eccleston’s Doctors.

Directed by Nick Hurran (‘Asylum of the Daleks’, ‘The Angels Take Manhattan’), filming on the special has now finished.
