10 more actors we’d love to see in ‘Doctor Who’

Posted Filed under

Following our recent wishlist of British acting legends that are overdue a guest spot in Doctor Who, here are ten more thespians we’d love to appear in the show…

Juliet Stevenson

Juliet Stevenson Atlantis

Audiences who only know Stevenson from Atlantis may be unaware that she was the leading young classical actress of her generation.

Viewers with slightly longer memories will remember how she blubbed for Britain in Truly Madly Deeply and broke cinema audiences’ hearts. In a nutshell, there’s little she can’t do.

Sacha Dhawan

In the Club Sasha Dhawan

So excellent in Mark Gatiss’s An Adventure in Space and Time and The Tractate Middoth, Dhawan already feels like part of the Who family.

A sensitive character actor still waiting for the inevitable household name status, surely it’s about time he followed fellow History Boys, James Corden, Samuel Anderson, Russell Tovey and Matt Smith, by starring in the series?

Anton Lesser

Anton Lesser The Hour

Currently going head to head with Mark Rylance on Wolf Hall, his Sir Thomas More is another quicksilver creation from the always dependable Lesser.

So compelling in The Hour and The Hollow Crown, Lesser has spent a career stealing the screen from bigger-name actors, with performances of quiet inscrutability and mercurial charge. Pair Lesser with Capaldi and it could be the stuff of tin-hat explosiveness.

Josette Simon

Josette Simon

An Evening Standard award winner for her work on Arthur Miller’s After the Fall, and a graduate of Blake’s 7, Simon is the kind of quietly impressive actress you can’t quite believe has never been in Doctor Who.

Surely it’s time to amend this?

Pam St Clement

Pam St Clement EastEnders

Genuinely. Seriously, we’re not joking.

Any actor who can overcome the pressures and pace of serial drama to deliver authentic and honest performances for over 25 years is worth casting in our book. If you have ever heard St Clement be interviewed, you will know that she is so much more than Fat Pat.

Honourable mention: Maxine Peake

Maxine Peake Silk

Cute though Joanna Page is in ‘The Day of the Doctor;, imagine how much ballsier Queen Bess would have been if Maxine Peake had played her? Just saying…
