5 of the most iconic moments in ‘Merlin’

We’ve picked out five of our favourite iconic moments in BBC One’s Merlin

Merlin Knights of the round table

In second place is the legend of the round table which we see first in the episode ‘The Coming of Arthur: Part Two’.

The symbolism of the round table is that it represents equality between Arthur and the Knights. This message is a straightforward one – and a message that they, thankfully, kept the same within the TV series. Arthur is inspired by the table and this inspires the story; a true tip of the hat to the legends.

Merlin Arthur Bradley james sword

In the top spot, it has to be the truly iconic moment of the Sword in the Stone and Excalibur itself.

The sword was associated with the legends from a very early stage and is therefore one of, if not, the biggest thing you look out for in any Arthurian adaptation. The sword is said to prove Arthur’s lineage and is often said to have magical powers.

Excalibur is first presented in Merlin in the episode ‘Excalibur’ when Kilgarrah and Merlin create the sword in order to kill the already dead. The big moment comes to us in its namesake episode, ‘Sword in the Stone: Part Two, when Merlin boosts Arthur’s confidence with a tale of how only the true and rightful king could pull the sword from the stone. The show stayed true to the legends and adapted this story in the best way possible.
