Christina Ricci to appear in Tim Burton’s Wednesday

The movie version of Wednesday returns to the “Addams Family” family.

One of the series firmly on our radar is Netflix’s Wednesday. Directed by Tim Burton, as his first television project, the show promises to follow Wednesday Addams (of The Addams Family) into her student years at the Nevermore Academy.

The show will star Jenna Ortega (Yes Day, Scream), but a former Wednesday is also appearing; Christina Ricci famously played the morbid teen in two 1990s big screen outings. The Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values (1993) were both enormous hits, starring the late Raul Julia, Anjelica Houston and Christopher Lloyd.

While details of Ricci’s role remain under wrap, we read (via Variety) that she will be a series regular.

Directed by Tim Burton, Wednesday comes from the pens of Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar. It’s described as a “sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery”. As well as Jenna Ortega, the show has already announced Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia and Luis Guzmán as Gomez.

Here’s the synopsis for Wednesday:

The eight-episode, live-action series directed and exec produced by Burton charts Wednesday Addams’ (Jenna Ortega) years as a student at Nevermore Academy, watching as she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago—all while navigating new and very tangled relationships.

In addition to Ortega and Ricci, Zeta-Jones and Guzmán, the show has also cast Gwendoline Christie, Hunter Doohan, Percy Hynes White, Joy Sunday, Emma Myers, Riki Lindhome, Jamie McShane, Georgie Farmer, Naomi Ogawa and Moosa Mostafa.

Additionally, thanks to Deadline, we understand that Tim Burton’s long-time collaborator Danny Elfman will write the music for the show.

There are no further details as yet but we’ll keep you posted.
