Greek-Inspired TV Shows Are Dominating UK Television

Greek-inspired TV shows are experiencing a surge on UK television channels right now, as Brits are drawn to the country’s strong cultural background and historical ties.

Greek Television Shows on UK Channels

One of the latest Greece-inspired hits is Two Weeks in August, which follows a group of friends who find themselves on a Greek island. Created by Catherine Shepherd, it’s an eight-part BBC series and stars Jessica Raine. This dark comedy quickly turns a relaxing holiday into an unsettling experience. The latest season was released in May 2026 and achieved an 82% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Netflix’s KAOS is another example, as it reimagines Greek gods in a more contemporary setting. Jeff Goldblum plays Zeus, and it offers a whole new spin on traditional mythology.

For fans of something more aspirational, Channel 4’s Home Greek Home follows designer Sarah Moore as she renovates an abandoned property on the Greek island of Skiathos. The show features numerous locations across Greece and gives British viewers a glimpse into what life is like living there. And, with five million British holidaymakers heading to Greece every year, there’s a strong audience for this type of content.

The Trip to Greece follows Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon as they embark on a culinary road trip, visiting historic landmarks across Greece while also sampling some of the classic cuisine the country is known for. Playing fictionalised versions of themselves, the show has four seasons and can be watched on major platforms like Sky.

Greek Influences Beyond Television Shows

The UK’s love of Greece isn’t just confined to television. There’s a range of popular books, such as Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, set against the landscape of Kefalonia. My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell is about the island of Corfu, and The Figurine by Victoria Hislop explores the modern-day identity of Greece, through antiquities, art, and other cultural influences.

It’s extended to podcasts, with Ancient Lives with Mary Beard. And those who play casino games online will see that the Age of the Gods Roulette game features Greek gods and incorporates them into a classic roulette format.

Of course, we can’t forget about film – some recent major film productions, including The Odyssey and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, were filmed extensively on Greek islands.

Greece is Becoming a Popular Filming Hub

Greece is a top location because of the financial incentives that are in place and how much industry support there is for international projects. There’s a 40% cash rebate scheme for any expenses that are incurred in the country, and as there are so many varied geographical regions, it can provide the same backdrop as Miami, the Baltic Sea or the Middle East, but at a fraction of the cost.  Streamlined permit assistance can be claimed from the Hellenic Film Commission, including location scouting support and English crews.

As the incentives for UK media crews to film in Greece are so strong, and as there’s such a rich cultural landscape to take advantage of, it wouldn’t be surprising to see it continue to grow in popularity as a filming destination. This is especially the case as the local filming infrastructure has been improved and is now able to cater to bigger, more elaborate productions.
