Is the Jurassic Park Series Losing its Appeal Among Audiences?

On July 16th, 1993, the first film in the Jurassic Park franchise hit big screens. Directed by Steven Spielberg, Jurassic Park, as it was aptly titled, continues to break records. According to Forbes, at 19.84 years, the movie set a record in the slowest race to globally surpass £757 million box office sales. While some may question the significance of holding this title, it speaks volumes about the sustained appeal of the Jurassic Park franchise. 27 years after its release, the 1993 film continues to record box office sales. With that in mind, let’s take a look at whether this can continue.

Diversification Could be Central to a Long-Term Existence

Purely from a cinematic standpoint, the franchise will continue existing until at least 2022. After that, however, it remains to be seen if the series can retain pre-existing levels of popularity. Much will likely depend on whether or not the series remains relevant, and the franchise’s expansion into other entertainment streams could influence its long-term future.

Over the past 27 years, the creators of Jurassic Park have sought to explore the video game sector in an effort to expand their market offerings. In 2015, Jurassic World was released onto Android and iOS devices, and required gamers to build parks for more than 50 different dinosaurs. Interestingly, however, it hasn’t just been traditional gaming platforms that the franchise has targeted.

Digitalisation has been the catalyst behind the growth of online casino gaming. Because of the industry’s modern-day popularity, it provides the perfect market to introduce crossover developments. Released back in 2014, the Jurassic Park slot has intertwined the appeal of edge-of-the-seat cinema with high-stakes gaming. While there’s a review here, prospective players can take comfort from the fact that the five-reel Microgaming title includes some of the series’ main characters, such as Alan Grant, as well as dinosaur-themed bonus games. Given that the online betting industry is forecast to grow significantly by 2023, there’s scope for the franchise to continue thriving within the gambling market.

Does the Past Tell Us Anything?

Since the early 90s, the science fiction franchise has become one of the most iconic movie series in cinematic history. Following Jurassic Park’s release in 1993, several other titles followed, including The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park III, Jurassic World, and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Interestingly, the success of the latest release in the series, Fallen Kingdom, indicates that there’s more to come from the dinosaur-themed franchise.

Shortly after its release, the title – which stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard – surged past the £757-million mark. At the time, it became just the third movie of 2018 to achieve this feat, along with Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther. Regarding the Jurassic Park franchise, Fallen Kingdom became the series’ third film to surpass £757 million in box office sales.

Given the success that the 2018 release enjoyed, it’s somewhat unsurprising to learn that another dinosaur-themed movie is in the offing. Jurassic World: Dominion is scheduled for release in 2022, and will once again feature both Dallas Howard and Pratt.

What Does the Future Hold?

Crucially, irrespective of whether the films themselves are getting better, the Jurassic Park franchise can now somewhat rely on nostalgia. If production continues throughout the next decade, Fallen Kingdom’s figures indicate that viewers will still flock to new releases. As such, it’s not outrageous to suggest that the franchise still has plenty of entertainment-fueled years ahead of it.
