Some incredible TV shows and other forms of entertainment have emerged in recent years, creating iconic new characters for us all to root for and fall in love with. However, while fresh takes on storytelling are always welcome, sometimes you simply cannot beat the classics.

Our society is rich in myths and legends passed down from generation to generation and ideas that first emerged in stories many years ago continue to endure to this day – across film, TV, and even in unexpected parts of the online entertainment world.

Surprising places

Famous icons from ancient tales are increasingly popular in virtual entertainment, such as the world of online bingo. For example, Betfair’s selection of bingo games includes Age of the Gods Bingo, a 90-ball version of the classic pastime that includes imagery and iconography related to Greek mythology. The title’s Arena of the Gods feature game even includes specific awards based on gods including Zeus, Athena, and Ares.

Elsewhere, the site also features online bingo games such as Champions of Valhalla as one of its so-called ‘Super Slots’. It explains how Eyecon’s title is inspired by Norse mythology and includes symbology that alludes to recognisable figures such as Odin, Freydis, and Berserker. Armour and weapons also feature within the imagery of the game.

Making a mark

Considering mythological figures are having an impact on online bingo, it should perhaps not be a major surprise to see them also continuing to make a mark on the small screen.

Zack Snyder may have turned his attention to superheroes and zombies in recent years, but an upcoming project with Netflix will see him explore Norse mythology. According to Small Screen, Twilight of the Gods is set to include the likes of Corey Stoll, Sylvia Hoeks, and John Noble. A couple of former Game of Thrones stars are also expected to feature, with Kristopher Hivju and Pilou Asbaek starring as Andvari and Thor, respectively.

Another show inspired by mythology was American Gods, but seemingly it will not be returning to the small screen. At the end of March, Deadline reported that the series had been cancelled by Starz, although the site added that the story could be concluded with an event series or a TV movie.

Of course, myths and legends also continue to have an impact on the big screen. Anticipation is high for the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder and Russell Crowe recently confirmed he is playing Zeus in the film.

A media mainstay

All in all, while new stories and characters are developed every year, it is fascinating to see how the entertainment world continues to breathe new life into the icons associated with ancient mythology.

The characters have become a mainstay of film and TV, but it is interesting how they have also proven to be an influence in less obvious areas as well. Online bingo is not something you would immediately associate with ancient gods, but titles like those mentioned above perhaps highlight how iconic they have now become. It will be intriguing to see where else they turn up in the future.
