The movie Luther: The Fallen Sun will get a release in cinemas ahead of its Netflix launch.
Updated 09/02/23: Netflix have revealed the trailer for Luther: The Fallen Sun.
Luther: The Fallen Sun takes place sometime after the fifth series; with the disgraced detective in jail while a gruesome serial killer terrorises London.
Naturally, the trailer begins with what looks suspiciously like a prison break…
As well as showcasing Idris Elba as the titular hero, the promo does an excellent job of introducing his foe, chillingly plated by Andy Serkis. We also meet Cynthia Erivo’s Odette Raine, who is also on Luther’s trail, and spy a terrified Hattie Morahan too.
Director Jamie Payne also shows off plenty of Central London, including one of those classic hero standing on top of a building shots. There’s even one in the movie poster…
The movie lands in cinemas on Friday 24th February, two weeks ahead of its Netflix release on March 10th.

The film sees Elba return to the character of the rule-breaking DCI John Luther, who he played for five series on the BBC between 2010 – 2019.
The official synopsis for The Fallen Sun reads:
“A gruesome serial killer is terrorising London while brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther sits behind bars. Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary.”
Written by Luther creator Neil Cross, The Fallen Sun stars Elba alongside Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis. Additionally, Dermot Crowley reprises his role as Luther’s former boss DSU Martin Schenk. The film’s director is Jamie Payne (Doctor Who, Outlander), who helmed the final run of the television series.
If you want to catch up on the character before the movie, all five series of show are still available on BBC iPlayer.
