One of the most anticipated comedy movies of 2018 is Life of the Party. Scheduled to be released in 2018, the film will feature Melissa McCarthy as the main star. It is actually co-written by the 46-year-old American actress as well. Details of the plot are yet to be made public, but there will be a party involved somehow. Given that McCarthy is a terrific comedy actress, Life of the Party promises to be hugely funny, but could it be as good as the following four movies, which are the best of the Gilmore Girls star?
The Heat (2013)
The production cost of The Heat was just over $40 million, but the 2013 movie grossed almost $250 million. That in itself underlines just good the film was. Also featuring Sandra Bullock, The Heat is about FBI Special Agent Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) and Boston Detective Shannon Mullins (Melissa McCarthy) trying to take down a mobster. As with most Melissa McCarthy movies, it is a comedy and will make you laugh all the way through.
Spy (2015)
Jason Statham and Jude Law are not always associated with comedy films, but in Spy, released in 2015, they were a class act. Melissa McCarthy is the lead character in this American action comedy spy movie. The film is about her character, Susan Cooper, being thrown into field work from a desk job at the CIA in order to stop the sale of a suitcase nuke in the black market. Yet another box office success, the charm of Spy was the way Cooper undergoes the transformation and in Melissa McCarthy’s superb acting.
Bridesmaids (2011)
Bridesmaids was a roaring success at the box office, and it is not hard to understand why. The 2011 American comedy movie was arguably Melissa McCarthy’s best. The story revolves around Annie, played by Kristen Wiig, who has to endure quite a lot after being asked to be a maid of honour for her best friend, Lillian, played by Maya Rudolph. The film resonated with the public, who could identify with the characters and what they were going through. Such is the popularity of Bridesmaids even to this day that there is a slot game based on the movie. You could give it a try and perhaps relive or write your own Bridesmaids story.
Identity Thief (2013)
As the title suggests, the movie is about identity theft. Released in 2013 and grossing just under $175 million at the box office, the story is about a woman, played by Melissa McCarthy, stealing the identity of a man, played by Jason Bateman. Bateman and McCarthy are the two biggest comedy actors working in Hollywood at the moment, and their performances are superb. Although the subject of the movie is rather dark and serious, it is the execution and the delivery that makes it a comedy for all ages.
Melissa McCarthy is a very prolific actress and has featured in a number of great movies. Among the notable ones other than those mentioned above are Charlie’s Angels (1999), This is 40 (2012), Tammy (2014) and Ghostbusters (2016).
