The UK Industry
The UK content industry has gone from strength to strength over the years. By the looks of things, it is going to continue to flourish as well because the production hub is growing more and more by the year. 2019 showed the highest spending amount on any movie and there is also a lot of high-end television productions in the works as well. Even the BFI, or the British Film Institute, have commented on the strong talent that the UK have to offer on the screen and off the screen. Inward investments look to have been very critical in this growth of strong production and of course, it has all exceeded the £3 billion mark for the first time. Inward investment has also seen £1.8 million spent on movies. The film production industry has seen similar growth to the casino industry. They are catching on to the fact that more and more people want movies instantly, on their devices from home. On top of this, they understand that people crave convenience and access to extensive catalogues which hold a mix of well-loved and original productions.
Netflix
Netflix have shown how important the UK market is to them over the last few years and they have made a lot of investments as well. They have also produced the Crown and way more expensive titles when compared to usual. Shepperton Studios opened up in 2019 and ever since then, this has marked the most expensive location out of the US. In the last few months, the company have grown the amount of employees they have in London. The UK also has some of the biggest talent and top creatives, meaning that there is a very good reason for them to be investing in this market. They have since signed deals with UK creatives at Netflix, and they have launched training programs that are designed to curate the next generation of talent.
Even though this influx of investment and the demand for creativity is certainly putting pressure on a lot of local broadcasters, it’s safe to say that the impact on the economy has been positive. The increased spending on TV didn’t just come from the US either. The amount of Indian productions taking place in the UK has also rocketed, paving the way for the UK and positioning them as being one of the top production hubs in the world.
