Russell T Davies: Doctor Who announcement coming within two weeks

Posted Filed under

Speaking on The Radio 2 Breakfast Show, Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies promised host Gary Davies that the BBC has plans for a press release regarding the programme soon.

Host Gary Davies said, “Now, I can’t have you here and not ask about Doctor Who, can I?”

After a bit of teasing banter and Russell T Davies describing his role as showrunner, the host asked, “Will we get an announcement about a new Doctor soon?”

“You will get an announcement!,” showrunner Davies replied. “There’s a press release lumbering through the BBC which, as you know, is like the Jurassic period and 57 people have to sign off on every single word so I promise you, oh, in about a week or two weeks, there will be some sort of press release ‒ and yet I can hear the gears slowing down even as I say that. You know this place!”

In October 2025, the BBC announced that showrunner Davies would pen a 2026 Doctor Who Christmas special. In February 2026, it was revealed that Davies had written several versions of this script, “depending on certain outcomes.”

However, in a podcast recorded in early May 2026, showrunner Davies said “I won’t be back filming anything until next year” when asked about his future plans.

Whether this upcoming BBC press release will reassure Doctor Who fans that the 2026 Doctor Who Christmas special is still in the works remains unclear.

It is also interesting to note that showrunner Davies’ answer was in response to a question regarding the actor who will play the next Doctor. Davies didn’t specifically say whether the BBC press release would include news of a new Doctor.
