Burn Notice and The Gifted creator Matt Nix is behind the new project…
Once upon a time, in the very early days of the 1990s, ABC attempted to make a Turner & Hooch TV show. It didn’t get past the pilot stage, but no ideas are beyond the reach of our modern reboot age, so Turner & Hooch is now being considered for a telly slot at Disney+, this year’s big streaming service from the Mouse House.
The new show will once again be based on the 1989 movie starring Tom Hanks, in which he played a detective with a canine partner called Hooch. Burn Notice and The Gifted creator Matt Nix is reportedly creating the series for Disney, according to Deadline.
Turner & Hooch made a decent profit at the box office in the weeks following its release, but received a critical drubbing.
“The one level on which this mild children’s comedy works is as an extended gross joke for 8-year-olds,” wrote The New York Times, while Buffalo News mourned its lead actor’s career choices, saying “Hanks’ taste in picking movie projects continues to be abominable.”
Luckily, he’s had a lot more success since the Turner & Hooch days! Meanwhile, a TV series about a detective and his dog sounds right up Disney+’s street.
