Very Young Frankenstein – FX plan a spinoff from the Mel Brooks comedy

The project comes from the team behind What We Do in the Shadows

Deadline have broken news that Mel Brooks’ 1974 comedy movie Young Frankenstein may be getting a television series spinoff, with FX close to greenlighting a pilot.

The pilot is from creative team behind What We Do in the Shadows, so that’s writer and showrunner Stefani Robinson, director Taika Waititi and Garrett Basch.

The classic horror parody starred Gene Wilder as Frederick Frankenstein, grandson of mad scientist Victor Frankenstein, with Peter Boyle as the monster and Marty Feldman as Igor.

Understandably, plot details remain under wraps (sorry, that’s more of a Mummy reference), so we don’t yet know if the show would be a prequel or something else entirely. However, the original movie’s producer Michael Gruskoff is on board, and the project has Mel Brooks’ blessing too.

The anarchic works of Mel Brooks appear to be back in fashion again, with a Spaceballs sequel in the works for Amazon MGM too. This is expected to see both Bill Pullman and Rick Morais back in their original roles of Lone Starr and Dark Helmet, joined by Keke Palmer and Lewis Pullman (Thunderbolts*).

We’ll keep you posted on the Very Young Frankenstein pilot.
