1899 announcement — a new series from the creators of Dark coming to Netflix

Pedigree aside, the most striking impression from the 1899 announcement is the scale of the international cast. The picture above shows: Baran bo Odar, Jantje Friese, José Pimentão, Mathilde Ollivier, Miguel Bernardeau, Jonas Bloquet, Yann Gael, Andreas Pietschmann, Emily Beecham, Isabella Wei, Maciej Musial, Gabby Wong, Rosalie Craig, Aneurin Barnard, Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Clara Rosager, Maria Erwolter and Alexandre Willaume. Apart from their experience, the German production team has access to the largest LED stage in Europe, allowing for filming with virtual sets via gaming technology. It’s not (to our simple minds) unlike the description of the environment also used to film The Mandalorian.

Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar created Dark, and this is the first production for their new company Dark Ways.

We’ve got the 1899 announcement — what’s the series about?

Here’s the plot outline from the press release:

The eight episodes follow the mysterious circumstances around the voyage of an immigrant ship from Europe to New York. The passengers, all of different backgrounds and nationalities, are united by their hopes and dreams for a new century and their future abroad. When they discover a second ship adrift on the open sea that had gone missing for months, their journey takes an unexpected turn. What they find on board will turn their passage to the promised land into a nightmare-like riddle, connecting each of the passenger’s pasts through a web of secrets…

There’s more in the 1899 announcement, as well as a teaser trailer.
