Hollywood Reporter is reporting a Spanish spinoff set in the same world as the Sandra Bullock film Bird Box is happening
Bird Box was in some ways an unexpected (and chilling) hit for Netflix when it appeared in 2018. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, and with some echoes of John Wyndham’s Day of the Triffids, it starred Sandra Bullock as a woman facing daunting odds in her attempt to survive. This new project is another example of Netflix’s diverse stance on production in that it’s a Spanish language original.
Alex and David Pastor, the filmmaking brothers behind sci-fi thrillers Carriers and Self/less, will write and direct, while Dylan Clark and Chris Morgan, who produced the 2018 hit for Netflix, will produce. Bird Box attracted a massive 26 million viewers (in the US) in its first week (according to Nielsen). At present we have no detail on the storyline and it will be a while before we have any casting news, but as the project seems to be being fast tracked, we expect updates by late summer.
The Pastors are no strangers to the post-apocalyptic; Carriers, their English-language debut that starred Chris Pine, told of a deadly global virus and a group of survivors who turn on each other. The Spanish-language thriller, Los ultimos dias (The Last Days), featured another global catastrophic event, and they recently co-created The Head, a 2020 series that was set in a South Pole research station whose staff may or may not have turned on each other.
If you haven’t seen Bird Box, we heartily recommend it; Sandra Bullock is an inspired piece of casting, there are some powerful scenes with John Malkovich, and it’s hard not to get drawn into this frightening vision of the end of the world. It was adapted from the Josh Malerman book of the same name, and is still available on Netflix. You can also read the Hollywood Reported article for more detail on the new (as yet nameless) project.
