Updated 27/11/24: Second Trailer for Black Doves.
As time ticks inexorably down towards the festive season, unless you’re of the opinion that we’re already in it, Netflix have the treats.
Dropping on Thursday, 5th December, is the Joe Barton-penned Christmas thriller Black Doves which stars Keira Knightly and Ben Whishaw.
Leaning to the comic, and the odd couple dynamic between its leads, there are explosions and intense looks all around, set to what sounds like a remix of Portishead’s 1994 hit Glory Box.
Plus, a sprinkling of snow, decorations and Sarah Lancashire as a tough-as-nails spymaster… what’s not to love?
Netflix unloads the first eight episode season on December 5th, 2024.

Black Doves – Netflix release the trailer for their festive thriller series
Ahead of its December release, Netflix have dropped the trailer for Black Doves.
Starring Keira Knightley and Ben Wilshaw, the streamer’s confidence is strong enough that they’ve already commissioned a second series.
What is Black Doves about?
Created and written by Joe Barton (The Lazarus Project), Black Doves sees Knightley and Wilshaw as an unlikely spy/assassin duo. Together, they enjoy some high-stakes global intrigue with plenty of action and wit. What could be more festive?
The cast also includes Andrew Buchan, Kathryn Hunter, Ella Lily Hyland, Adam Silver, Ken Nwosu, Gabrielle Creevy and Omari Douglas. Plus, Sarah Lancashire, Andrew Koji, Luther Ford, Adeel Akhtar and Paapa Essiedu.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Set against the backdrop of London at Christmas, Black Doves is a sharp, action-filled, and heartfelt story of friendship and sacrifice. It follows Helen Webb (Keira Knightley), a quick-witted, down-to-earth, dedicated wife and mother — and professional spy. For 10 years, she’s been passing on her politician husband’s secrets to the shadowy organization she works for: the Black Doves. When her secret lover Jason (Andrew Koji) is assassinated, her spymaster, the enigmatic Reed (Sarah Lancashire), calls in Helen’s old friend Sam (Ben Whishaw) to keep her safe.
Sam Young (Ben Whishaw) is a suave, Champagne-drinking assassin. But having been out of the game since a failed job with disastrous consequences, he’s come home to a London that has moved on without him. As his past threatens to catch up with him, his task is to protect Helen as she investigates who killed Jason and why. Together they uncover a vast, interconnected conspiracy linking the murky London underworld to a looming geopolitical crisis.

With eight episodes, Black Doves premieres on December 5th, 2024.
