Blackadder’s Baldrick returns for Comic Relief 2023

Sir Tony Robinson will reprise his famous Blackadder character for this year’s Comic Relief.

Thanks to an appearance by writer Richard Curtis on the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show, we’ve learned that Blackadder is back for this year’s Comic Relief.

Tony Robinson is reprising his role as the eternally put upon servant for a sketch as part of the charity telethon.

Blackadder Goes Fourth: Tony Robinson as Baldrick

Curtis, who co-created the sitcom with Rowan Atkinson, shared the news while admitting he was a bit nervous about it. He said:

“For the first time in 20 years, Baldrick is going to be giving some kind of performance. We’re just conspiring about it now, so I think there’s going to be a marvellous, turnip-based thing with Tony Robinson now back in action, so I’m excited about that.”

However, when asked if Edmund Blackadder himself, Rowan Atkinson, would also feature, he replied: “No, Rowan’s far too serious to do any of that!

While that may be true, we recently enjoyed Atkinson’s comic stylings in Netflix’s Man vs. Bee.

Comic Relief

Unsurprisingly, given Richard Curtis’ pivotal role in both, Blackadder’s association with Comic Relief goes right back to the first Red Nose Day in 1998.

Blackadder: The Cavalier Years starred Rowan Atkinson and Tony Robinson as Sir Edmund Blackadder and Baldrick – the last two men remaining faithful to the King during the English Civil War. The 15 minute episode also starred the late Warren Clarke, with Stephen Fry appearing as King Charles I.

This year’s Red Nose Day takes place on March 17th; the hosts are AJ Odudu, David Tennant, Joel Dommett, Paddy McGuinness and Zoe Ball.
