A Blake’s 7 reboot is coming — here’s what we know

If you’re a fan of 70s UK science fiction, the offerings from the BBC were few but memorable, particularly Terry Nation’s Blake’s 7From an era of low-budgets and high ambition, it came from an era of few channels and little choice. If nothing else, it’s notable for two things — the title character and the final episode. Both took the series in unexpected directions. Fans are currently being treated to Blu-Ray remasters, which started in 2025, now they can look forward to a reboot.

Tell me about the original series

The Seven of the titles were (and it changed) a group of criminals and various computers with access (for some series) to a highly advanced starship — The Liberator. Led by Blake (Gareth Thomas), the core crew also includes his rival, Avon (Paul Darrow), charismatic thief Vila (Michael Keating), telepath Cally (Jan Chappell) and portable super AI Orac (various voice actors, including Peter Tuddenham). Over four series, many others came and went as the group fought the Federation in a galaxy of crooks, colonies and corruption.

The series had its faults, but managed to lose its lead character yet continue without Blake, bring him back for a grand finale and mass murder which a lot of people seemed to watch even if they didn’t watch science fiction and even destroy their special starship. There were tensions, trials, enemies (particularly Servelan played by Jacqueline Pearce).

If all that’s not enough, Big Finish has produced a lot of excellent spin-off stories on audio. We’ve reviewed many of these here on Cultbox — check here for examples.

So, what of the Blake’s 7 reboot

Deadline reports The Last of Us director Peter Hoar has launched a production outfit and is working on the show with A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder exec Matthew Bouch. They state:

Hoar, who directed the critically-acclaimed “Long, Long Time” ep of HBO’s The Last of Us, plans to direct the Blake’s 7 reboot, which will go out to buyers soon. Bouch would “love it to go to the BBC” and will likely seek co-pro funding from the American streamers and European players like RTL.

Bouch has a lot to say about the show and other projects. This is one very close to our hearts and we’ll be keeping a look out for updates.
