Borgen cast announcement and some launch details

Today’s Borgen cast announcement brings some welcome news on progress with bringing this Danish show back to our screens

Borgen is still happening. When Netflix took the opportunity to keep the show alive in early 2019 (as we reported at the time here), little was known of the casting (beyond central characters). Now we have much more detail thanks to the Borgen cast announcement. To recap: all we knew was the return of the creator Adam Price with lead actresses Sidse Babett Knudsen (Birgitte Nyborg) and Birgitte Hjort Sørensen (Katrine Fønsmark). Now we have the following additional cast: Mikkel Boe Følsgaard and Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen (both also seen in The Rain).

New cast also include Özlem Saglanmak, Simon Bennebjerg, Johanne Louise Schmidt and Magnus Millang. Returning from before (and it’s been many years) are: Søren Malling (Torben Friis), Signe Egholm Olsen (Anne Sophie Lindenkrone), Mikael Birkkjær (Philip Christensen) and many more. There’s also a role for Viola Martinsen (Equinox).

Netflix also provided some comments, including from Sidse Babett Knudsen:

“We’re finally getting started with Borgen again, and it’s definitely about time. I have been looking forward to this moment so much that I feel like I am about to explode. I look forward to meeting all the new characters, people on both sides of the camera (and the desks) and to revisiting the ‘old ones’ from the first seasons.”

Mikkel Boe Følsgaard is very keen on becoming part of the show:

“5-6 years ago, I lived in England for a period of time. When I told people over there that I was from Denmark, it wasn’t Michael Laudrup, Queen Margrethe nor Aqua they started to talk about; it was Borgen. Everyone had seen it. Everyone wanted to discuss it. Everyone praised it. I look forward to getting started with the production and to become a part of Borgen’s universe”

Borgen is expected in 2022 and will be shown first by Danish broadcaster DR, before moving to Netflix for worldwide distribution.
