As reboot news goes, this one’s a biggie. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is coming back, with creator Joss Whedon acting as executive producer and Midnight, Texas creator Monica Owusu-Breen acting as writer and showrunner.
The new show will be pitched to streaming and cable networks, which tend to offer more freedom to series than traditional broadcast networks, and feature a black female lead. No more details are available, with the project still in the very early stages.
“Like our world, it will be richly diverse, and like the original, some aspects of the series could be seen as metaphors for issues facing us all today,” said the producers.
How we feel about this depends on one key thing – is this going to be another chapter of the same story, picking up with another slayer, or are we talking full reboot?
If it’s the former, this could be an interesting exploration of how the role of women has changed since 2003, when the show wrapped up its seventh season having activated all of the world’s potential slayers. The characters’ stories have continued in canonical comic book stories.
