The Sex Education star will star in Daddy Issues with David Morrissey.

The graduating class of Sex Education seem intent on taking over the airwaves.

Ncuti Gatwa is the new Doctor Who and was in Barbie along with Emma Mackey. So was Conor Swindells, who’ll be returning for an second series of SAS: Rogue Heroes. Then there’s Asa Butterfield, with another Christmas movie out, a sequel to last year’s Your Christmas or Mine.

Another major talent who’s emerged from the series is Aimee Lou Wood. Following a role opposite Bill Nighy in Living, and a West End run in Cabaret, she’s soon to appear with Jodie Whittaker in the forthcoming Toxic Town for Netflix, and in Alice & Jack for Channel 4.

Now, she’s also been announced as one of the stars of the forthcoming comedy Daddy Issues alongside David Morrissey.

With an odd couple father/daughter dynamic at its heart, the show promises dating disasters and failed romances, toxic friendships and messy family dynamics, plus a dangerously sociopathic antenatal teacher.

Here’s what we know…

The show follows Gemma (Aimee Lou Wood), who lives for the weekend when she can get blasted and party hard in Stockport, Manchester. But after joining the mile high club with a random hook-up on her way back from a holiday to Portugal, she’s pregnant, and it couldn’t come at a worse time.

The only person Gemma has left in her life is her dad Malcolm (David Morrissey), who is kind hearted but useless – he can’t load a washing machine, boil an egg or change the Wi-Fi password. Malcolm is suffering from the collapse of his family and living in a bedsit for divorced men.

Which is how Gemma and her dad end up living in Gemma’s flat. She needs support at a critical time in a woman’s life, he needs help microwaving rice without it exploding.

The show comes from writer Danielle Ward (Brassic) is a Fudge Park production for BBC Three and BBC iPlayer. The directors are Catherine Morshead (The Full Monty) and Damon Beesley (White Gold). The producer is Lynn Roberts, executive producers are Phil Gilbert (Fudge Park Productions) with Aimee Lou Wood, David Morrissey, Danielle Ward and Damon Beesley.

Aimee Lou Wood says:

“It had been a very long time since a script had made me laugh out loud. Danielle’s did exactly that. Then when I heard David was involved, I was even more excited. He’s someone I have admired throughout my life. Watching shows like Blackpool and Red Riding when I was younger fuelled my interest in acting and so it feels surreal and amazing to be working with someone I class as a legend and inspiration.”

David Morrissey adds:

“I’m delighted to be working with Aimee Lou Wood as she’s someone I’ve admired for a while now. She’s a truly unique and gifted talent. Danielle has crafted such a funny and heartfelt piece and I’m so excited to be part of it.”

Daddy Issues runs for six episodes, with filming already underway.
