- Steven Knight’s rollicking tale of the SAS continues with new Rogue Heroes joining the story for series 2
SAS Rogue Heroes made a significant splash when it landed on BBC One last year. After drawing impressive audience figures, including over 9 million viewers for its first episode, the show was swiftly recommissioned for a second series last December.
Written by Peaky Blinders’ scribe Steven Knight, SAS Rogue Heroes draws on Ben Macintyre’s best-selling book of the same name and chronicles the audacious exploits of the British to defeat the Axis war machine by any means necessary.
Here’s the premise for SAS Rogue Heroes Series 2:
Spring, 1943. With David Stirling captured and Paddy Mayne now in charge of the SAS, their attention must turn from the conflict in North Africa to mainland Europe. But GHQ have cast doubt over the future of the regiment, while the creation of a new unit and a surprise arrival make things even more difficult for the men. Can they prove that the SAS remains essential to the war, wherever it may lead them?
The returning heroes will be led by Jack O’Connell as Paddy Mayne, with Connor Swindells as David Stirling, Sofia Boutella as Eve Mansour, and Dominic West as Dudley Clarke all back too.
Additionally, Theo Barklem-Biggs returns as Reg Seekings, as does Corin Silva as Jim Almonds, Jacob Ifan as Pat Riley, Jacob McCarthy as Johnny Cooper, Stuart Campbell as Bill Fraser, and Bobby Schofield as Dave Kershaw.
New recruits
Among the new faces for series 2 are Gwilym Lee (Bohemian Rhapsody) playing Bill Stirling, David Stirling’s brother and founder of the 2SAS regiment, while Con O’Neill (Our Flag Means Death) plays General Montgomery.
Other new recruits include Mark Rowley (The Last Kingdom) and Jack Barton (Heartstopper), who will play SAS members Jock McDiarmid and John Tonkin respectively. Plus, Paolo De Vita, Anna Manuelli, Edward Bennett and Matteo Franco also join the cast.
Filming has now begun on the second run of episodes, taking place in both Croatia and the UK.
Series creator, writer and executive producer Steven Knight says:
“It’s so good to be back in the wild world of the SAS so soon. The second chapter is even more incredible than the first and we hope to do justice to the brave men and women whose story we are telling.”
Series 2 will comprise 6 hour-long episodes, directed by Stephen Woolfenden. Stephen Smallwood (The Serpent) produces. The series’ executive producers are Karen Wilson, Emma Kingsman-Lloyd and Martin Haines for Kudos, and Nick Lambon for the BBC.
SAS Rogue Heroes appears on BBC One in the UK, and MGM+ in the United States.
Series 1 is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
