Danielle Deadwyler has been cast in a lead role in the X-Files reboot
Hulu has officially greenlit a pilot to revive the classic series. Sinners filmmaker Ryan Coogler — who has long been attached to the show — is now confirmed to both write and direct the pilot.
Who will Danielle Deadwyler be playing in the X-Files reboot
The original show (which appeared in 1993 and ran for nine seasons and gave us two movies, plus a later two seasons) started with Agent Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) being assigned to the paranormal division to help debunk true believer Agent Fox Mulder’s (David Duchovny) work. While Danielle Deadwyler (The Woman in the Yard, The Piano Lesson) will clearly be playing one of the two leads, there’s no reveal yet as to which — we suspect this will be announced shortly when the other role is cast.
From the Hollywood Reporter, we do learn of at least one change, with the new show’s official description:
“Two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.”
There have been reports Anderson has been approach to have some involvement in the show — we’ll wait for confirmation before speculating, but if so, it implies neither the Scully nor Mulder role is being recreated and this is a new pairing. We suspect this is the case.
Jennifer Yale (See, The Copenhagen Test) will serve as showrunner. The X-Files‘ original creator and showrunner, Chris Carter, will be a non-writing executive producer on the series. Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler, who are Coogler’s partners at their Proximity Media banner, are also non-writing EPs on the show. Proximity’s Simone Harris is a co-executive producer.
We’ll bring you updates on casting when we see them. Until then, remember, The Truth is Out There.
