The wheels are very much turning on DC’s new streaming service, DC Universe, as they’ve now cast actress Brec Bassinger as Stargirl in her own series…
In advance of the channel’s first show, Titans, which airs next month (and we got a fresh look at that particular show earlier this month), DC is prepping its future series. They’ve now found an actress for the role of Stargirl to top-line the young superhero’s own series.
Said actress is Brec Bassinger, an 19-year-old known for roles in Status Update and Hulu series All Night, and she’ll be playing Courtney Whitmore, a teen who discovers her superhero stepfather’s Cosmic Staff and Cosmic Converter Belt and acquires powers of her own.
Stargirl will be written by Geoff Johns, who’s also overseeing Titans and Doom Patrol. He’ll executive produce alongside Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter. It’ll premiere in 2019 and consist of 13 episodes.
Upon the commissioning of the series back in July, Johns told Deadline, “Obviously, Stargirl was the first character I created for DC. Most important, Courtney Whitmore was inspired by my sister who passed away.”
“To have an opportunity to tell a story celebrating this superhero was literally the first thing I wanted to do because it is so personal to me,” he said. “Also, a character that speaks to being young, to a legacy and to pushing forward seems so important to me nowadays.”
Stargirl will air in 2019 and we’ll bring you more news on this series as we hear it.
