The possibility of a sequel to Doctor Strange, Marvel’s mystical superhero entry starring Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch, has increasingly gathered steam this summer, and it is now rumoured to start production in spring 2019.
Kevin Feige kickstarted speculation about when we’d be getting Doctor Strange 2 back in June when he was discussing the aftermath of Avengers: Infinity War. Feige said to Cinemablend, “Sometimes it’s where do those characters pop up? [Doctor] Strange, you know, whenever we do another Strange one, which we will do, it will be a number of years from the first Strange, and yet he’s a very big part of Infinity War.”
It was our first confirmation that a sequel might be in the pipeline and the sudden firing of Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn earlier this month has only fuelled the possibility of an early Strange follow-up. With the third film in Gunn’s series needing a new director production will understandably held up – might that be filled by Doctor Strange 2?
The Mirror is now reporting that Cumberbatch will return to the role with a tidy £5m bump in his pay check and a six month production will take place next spring. We’d predict his co-stars Rachel McAdams and Benedict Wong would also return.
We expect confirmation for such a project will be announced in the coming months – unless Marvel can get production for Guardians of the Galaxy 3 back on track very soon.
Either way, we’ll keep you updated on Marvel’s upcoming slate of films.
