The sitcom last came back for a 2019 Christmas Special which topped festive viewing figures.
Updated: Co-creator Ruth Jones says that the Gavin & Stacy Christmas speculation is “sadly a rumour”.
Despite the excitement generated by the recent report in Deadline, it appears that there’s no concrete news to announce on the subject.
Speaking to Oliver Callan on Ireland’s RTÉ Radio 1 on Wednesday, on promotional duties for her role in the Sister Act Musical in Dublin, Gavin & Stacey co-creator, writer and star Ruth Jones has shot down speculation that the show is about to return for a further Christmas catch up.
In addition to confirming that the rumour is simply that, “sadly a rumour”, she added: “All I can say is, if there was something to say on that front, James [Corden] and I would happily announce it, we would.”
She also addresses a supposed bidding war between the BBC and Netflix for the show.
If you fancy a bit more speculation, BBC News suggest that it’s very early in the year for such announcements. We’ll watch with interest.

Gavin & Stacey – another Christmas Special in the works?
Deadline are running with the news that the popular sitcom Gavin & Stacey is planning a further festive edition.
Written by and starring Ruth Jones and James Corden, with Joanna Page and Matthew Horne as the titular couple, the show followed a love affair which took place at either ends of the M4.
The series began its life on BBC Three, before growing in popularity and finding a mainstream BBC One audience. It aired three series and a Christmas Special between 2007 – 2010.
Then five years ago, there was a further Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special which caught up with the characters and ended on a terrific proposal cliffhanger. That found a monster 18 million viewers and ensured that the BBC ruled the festive roost in 2019.
The Deadline report suggests that the show is in pre-production, with plans to shoot an episode over the summer, ready for the Christmas schedules. With James Corden moving on from his American talk show hosting duties, it’s not surprising that thoughts might turn to his enduringly popular hit.
Gavin & Stacey is produced by Steve Coogan’s Baby Cow, Ruth Jones’ Tidy Productions and Fulwell 73, which is co-owned by James Corden.
We’ll keep you posted on the Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special – and in the meantime, the show’s entire back catalogue is on BBC iPlayer.
