Paramount Australia, BBC Studios Productions Australia and Screenwest have confirmed the start of production on Ghosts Australia.
Filming in Western Australia, the show adapts of the acclaimed comedy which concluded at Christmas 2023.
With a spookily familiar premise, Ghosts Australia stars Tamala Shelton (Nowhere Boys) and Rowan Witt (Book Of Mormon). They play Kate and Sean, the show’s central (living) couple.
They’re joined by an ensemble of ghosts including Irish potato famine survivor, mother of 13 and publican Eileen (Mandy McElhinney) and naval officer Gideon (Brent Hill).
There’s also 1900s socialite and bride-to-be Miranda (Ines English) and ’80s aerobics instructor Lindy (Michelle Brasier). Plus, Gold Rush-era Chinese miner Joon (George Zhao) and Satan, a misunderstood ’90s motorbike gang member with a heart of gold (Jackson Tozer).
As before, British fans can enjoy looking for directly translated ghosts and those who are unique. There’s seemingly more regional variation than with the US version. The new ghosts are described as being “chaotic, unpredictable and messy as Australian history itself.”
Ghosts Australia will have an initial 8-episiode run. The directors are Christiaan Van Vuuren (Top End Bub) and Madeleine Dyer (Colin from Accounts, Austin).
The writing team is led by writer and executive producer Josh Mapleston (Surviving Summer), with script editor and writer Libby Butler (Neighbours). Joining them are writers Shontell Ketchell (Gold Diggers), Philip Tarl Denson (Zero-Point) and Steph Tisdell (Rosehaven).
Ghosts International
Australia isn’t the only country with a remake, as the German Ghosts launched in March 2025. There are also potentially Greek and Spanish versions in the works too.

The German version features a Neanderthal, a Roman legionnaire, a Countess, a feminist maid, an insurance salesman, a teacher and a love-hungry poet.
We’ll keep you posted on Ghosts.
In the meantime, you can find all five series of the UK original on BBC iPlayer.
