Here’s an odd piece of news: despite the fact that Sky One cancelled Agatha Raisin after one series and a movie, way back in January, the show’s second series is now all set to air on Sky One. This bizarre bit of backpedalling was made possible by Acorn TV.
Acorn TV co-produced the Agatha Raisin movie and the show’s first series, alongside Sky, and they decided to carry on and make a second series even when Sky dropped out of the partnership.
Acorn went ahead, without Sky, and made a six-episode second series for Agatha Raisin. And now, Sky has signed a new deal to broadcast these new episodes in the UK and Ireland.
We’d love to know, although no such figures have been released, whether Sky spent more money picking up the rights for Agatha Raisin series 2 than they would have spent on sticking in their original partnership and co-producing the series.
All we know is that Acorn TV made the episodes and that Sky is going to air them, either late this year or in early 2019. Ashley Jensen, of course, returns in the title role.
As we hear more, we’ll be sure to let you know.
