Clark Gregg, who plays Agent Coulson in Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. having originated the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, has revealed that ABC’s Marvel-infused spy series could come to a close with its upcoming seventh season.
Gregg’s first appearance as Coulson came in 2008’s MCU-launching Iron Man film, and he popped up throughout ‘Phase One’ of the films before being bumped off by Loki in 2012’s The Avengers. Coulson was then brought back via comic book sci-fi techniques in Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s first season.
Gregg recently took time off from Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. to film an appearance in the 1990s-set MCU film Captain Marvel. And on the promotional tour from this film, Den Of Geek asked the actor if he thinks Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. will end after season 7.
“That’s the word I’ve heard,” said Gregg. “The announcement I read was, two more seasons, six and seven.”
Gregg went onto stress that the show’s soon-to-launch sixth season is something to really look forward to:
“I can’t wait for people to see season 6. People who have been on the journey with me and with Phil Coulson are going to get something very, very different.”
We look forward to seeing what Gregg means by that, and we suspect that it something to do with the fact that he seems to be playing a different character other than Coulson in the upcoming episodes.
Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6, which sounds like it could be the penultimate run of the show, will premiere in the US in May.
