Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. just aired its 100th episode over in the USA. If you haven’t watched it yet, and you don’t want to know anything about what happens, stop reading now…
Are you still here? Okay, let’s crack on.
Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode 100 harked all the way back to the show’s original mystery: the matter of Clark Gregg’s Agent Phil Coulson still being alive, despite the fact that he was stabbed through the heart by Loki in The Avengers. Through this very show, we eventually learned that brain operations and Kree DNA had been used to revive Coulson.
But episode 100 dropped a bombshell: the Kree serum is burning off, and Coulson’s original injury will eventually catch up with him. The suit-wearing super-spy who appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first film (Iron Man) and the MCU’s first sojourn onto TV doesn’t have long to live. Sob.
Co-showrunner Jed Whedon has been chatting about the reveal, explaining that Coulson has “come to terms” with his seemingly inevitable demise, even though he’s “not excited for it.” Whedon also said this:
“It’s something he actually had to come to terms with a long time ago when he was discovering the T.A.H.I.T.I. Project and everything that had been done to him. I don’t think he wants to go through any of that again. He’s ready for nature to take its course. You can sense from everybody else in the episode that they’re not as willing to let go as he seems to be. Some of that will play out. What happens, we’ll have to wait and see, but he seems as much at peace with it as you can be considering there’s so much he’s done in a world that thinks he’s dead.”
On a brighter note, Fitz and Simmons got married, and Coulson officiated the ceremony! In a separate interview, Jemma Simmons actress Elizabeth Henstridge described the Arrow-esque outdoor ceremony as a “really lovely moment for the team.”
As for the reveal that Jeff Ward’s Deke is Fitz and Simmons’ grandson from the future, Henstridge said this:
“Iain and I had a theory, but no one would ever confirm it — despite our best efforts! […] I love that plot twist, and it makes for some really fun moments coming up.”
We’ll bring your more Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. news as we hear it. The series airs on ABC in the States and Channel 4 in the UK.
