As Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. approaches the finale of its fifth season, the show’s writing staff are preparing for the eventuality that this could be the final end of the superhero-adjacent spy series.
Last year, at the close of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4, the ABC network expressed an interest in cancelling the series, but their owners from Disney shot down the idea. Now, a year or so after that close call, fans around the globe are wondering what ABC and Disney will decide to do with Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. after season 5 wraps up.
The Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. showrunners have admitted that they have prepared accordingly, taking into mind that the series may not be renewed for a sixth run. In a new interview, co-showrunner Jed Whedon has explained that work is underway on the season 5 finale scripts. Addressing the possibility of the show ending for good this time, Whedon stressed, “we’re ready for if this is the end. We’re definitely going to make it rewarding either way.”
Maurisa Tancharoen, the other co-showrunner, stated that the episode at the end of season 5 could work as “either” a season finale or a series finale. We’ll just have to wait for an announcement, then. Here’s hoping that Clark Gregg’s Phil Coulson and all the others do get a chance to ride again.
Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 is airing now, on Channel 4 in the UK.
