Last Tango in Halifax creator Sally Wainwright will return to BBC One with a new one-off drama about the Bronte sisters.
The Happy Valley writer will also direct the 120-minute film.
To Walk Invisible: The Bronte Sisters revolves around the three sisters’ increasingly difficult relationship with their brother Branwell, who in the last three years of his life sank into alcoholism, drug addiction and appalling behaviour. Life at home with the Brontes – Charlotte, Anne and Emily – at this time was not a comfortable place to be, and yet from this environment sprang their remarkable literary output.
Sally Wainwright commented: “I am thrilled beyond measure that I’ve been asked by the BBC to bring to life these three fascinating, talented, ingenious Yorkshire women.”
Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One, added: “The Bronte sisters have always been enigmatic, but Sally Wainwright’s brilliantly authentic new BBC One drama brings the women behind some of our greatest literary masterpieces to life. It’s an extraordinary tale of family tragedy and their passion and determination, against the odds, to have their genius recognized in a male 19th-century world.”
To Walk Invisible: The Bronte Sisters will be shot in and around Yorkshire.
Happy Valley will return for a second season and Last Tango in Halifax will return for a fourth season later this year.
