NBC has cancelled Champions after one season, but the Mindy Kaling-produced sitcom is hoping to find a new home.
On this side of the Atlantic, Champions is hosted by Netflix, but it is unclear at this stage whether the iconic streaming service would be interested in taking over production of the show. Hulu is another contender to be Champions‘ new home; after all, the American streaming service previously picked up Kaling’s The Mindy Project after Fox dropped it.
Champions centres on J. J. Totah’s Michael, a theatre kid who is sent by his mother (Priya, played by Kaling) to live with his gym-owning father (Anders Holm’s Vince). Michael has to adapt to this new life with the father he has only just met, while Vince is forced to grow up and embrace parenthood for the first time.
Around this emotional core, a strong supporting cast flourishes. Fortune Feimster, Robert Constanzo, Ginger Gonzaga, Yassir Lester and Mouzam Makkar all play characters that work at Champions, the gym that gives the show its name. Also, Andy Favreau regularly steals the show as Matthew, Vince’s brother and Michael’s uncle, who brings a charmingly idiotic innocence to the show.
Despite having a lot going for it and packing a lot of laughs, Champions has struggled for ratings since the start. It might be better suited to an online platform that a cable network, but only time will tell if Champions gets a chance to live on and prove that.
We’ll let you know if we hear any more Champions news.
