The BBC has confirmed that Dickensian has been axed after just one season.
The 20-part period drama series launched last December, initially attracting over 5 million viewers. However, had halved by the show’s tenth episode.
Created by Tony Jordan (Hustle), Dickensian was set within the fictional realms of Charles Dickens’ critically acclaimed novels and cost an estimated £10m to make.

A BBC spokeswoman commented: “We are incredibly proud of Dickensian and would like to thank all those involved in such an ambitious series. We sometimes have to make difficult decisions to make room for new shows and it won’t be returning for a second series.”
Writer and executive producer Tony Jordan added: “I am disappointed that we will not be making a second series of Dickensian. We are hugely proud of what we achieved in the first series of Dickensian and would like to thank everyone who helped us create a truly special and unique drama.”
