Dan Stevens will play the lead character in FX’s new X-Men spin-off TV series, Legion.

The Downton Abbey star joins Rachel Keller (Fargo), Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation) and Jean Smart (Fargo), THR reports.

Filming on Fargo producer Noah Hawley’s pilot begins next month.

Dan Stevens, who played Matthew Crawley in Downton for three seasons, will take on the role of David Haller, “a man who may be more than human and who has struggled with mental illness since his teenage years.”

The Legion pilot will see David confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees might be real. The character is the son of X-Men founder Charles Xavier (aka Professor X) in the comics, first appearing in in 1985.

Noah Hawley will be the show’s executive producer alongside Lauren Shuler Donner (Wolverine), Bryan Singer (X-Men: Days of Future Past), Simon Kinberg (The Martian), Marvel’s Jeph Loeb (Daredevil) and Jim Chory (Daredevil).
