Inspired by the original Holmes, Rob Doherty entertains the notion of Sherlock being truly fascinated by the elements of mystery: “Our Sherlock is a real puzzle solver, I think that’s really his obsession. To a point you might call it an addiction.”
However, puzzle solving might not be the only thing Holmes is addicted to in the series.
“The original Sherlock dabbled with cocaine and opiates. Our Sherlock had those same problems,” Doherty revealed recently at a preview for the US Television Critics Association.
Hinting at the back-story of Jonny Lee Miller’s Holmes in Elementary, the show’s creator added: “Something terrible happened to him in London and he spiraled out of control.”
Fans of the detective will be excited to know that Sherlock’s nemesis Moriarty will be making an appearance at some point, but by the words of Doherty, he’s going to be pulling more strings than Holmes can handle: “In so many of the books he was such a shadowy figure. He was described as the spider at the center of the web of crime. In other words, there are a few dominoes we may knock over before we get to him.”
Elementary premieres stateside on 27th September and in the UK later this year on Sky Living.
