The Russo brothers will bring the iconic card game Magic: The Gathering to the Netflix streaming service, executive producing an anime series inspired by the fantasy property. Here’s everything we know…
Netflix announced the news on its NXOnNetflix Twitter account, sharing the image atop this article and this enthusiastic statement:
“HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT TIME: Netflix and Wizards of the Coast are teaming up with Joe and Anthony Russo to make a Magic: The Gathering anime series and this teaser of Chandra has me asking QUESTIONS.”
The Hollywood Reporter then shared some extra details, confirming that Henry Gilroy (Star Wars Rebels, Star Wars: The Clone Wars) and Jose Molina (The Tick, Agent Carter) are set to function as lead writers and co-exec producers on the new show.
Wizards Of The Coast, the company behind the card game that launched in 1993 and still has millions of fans, will serve in a producing capacity on the show. The Russo brothers – who worked on TV shows such as Community and Arrested Development before shooting to global stardom as the directors of such massive Marvel movies as Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame – will be executive producers.
Apparently, the episode count and episode length for the first season is yet to be decided, but Netflix is already hoping that a successful launch could lead to an interconnected universe of Magic: The Gathering shows in a similar vein to the interconnected Netflix/Marvel collaboration.
As we hear more, we’ll let you know.
